The sea
If anything happens in, on, or under the sea, chances are that the University of Southampton will know about it and may even be involved in some way.
For anybody seeking to unlock the secrets and mysteries of the world’s oceans, the University provides world-class education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in oceanography and earth sciences.
The School of Ocean and Earth Science, formed in 1998, is ideally located in a purpose-built waterfront campus. It is the largest single university group of marine and earth scientists in the country, with 470 undergraduate students studying three or four-year degree courses and 48 MSc students.
The National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, is a purpose-built development creating a centre for 450 research scientists, lecturing and support staff, as well as more than 600 undergraduate and postgraduate students. As one of the world’s top five oceanographic research institutions, the centre is charged with pursuing and achieving scientific excellence. At the same time it has a commercial dimension, undertaking academic, sponsored and commissioned research, consultancy and collaborative projects with industry, government departments and agencies worldwide.
