Computing
Is computer science dry and dusty and ’strictly for the boffins’? Try telling that to David Beckham, Wayne Rooney and co.
A student at the Univeristy of Southampton has come up with an idea to tag football players in an effort to rid the game of rows over offside. Jonathan Dunne at the University’s School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) based his final-year research project on how technology might improve the accuracy of referees’ decisions.
Radio tags could be embedded into each player’s kit and within the match ball. These would send signals to a central server to highlight infringements. Jonathan compared his scheme with other technologies such as satellite tracking and found that his was more accurate and affordable.
ECS at the University of Southampton is one of the world’s leading centres for research, teaching, enterprise and innovation in Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The UK’s first-ever national survey of student satisfaction saw top place for Computer Science at Southampton. On average, ECS students gave their course 4.6 marks (out of five). This was one of the top scores in the country for any subject – a real Premier League performance!
